Our Story
In the early morning of December 12, 2002, a call came into Paterson’s fire
dispatch reporting a house fire. Veteran Captain Larry Franklin of Engine
6 responded with the first alerted engine companies. Rushing to the fire
Captain Franklin and the fire rescue team of Engine 6 arrived on the scene to
find the home engulfed in flames. Bystanders reported to firefighters that three
occupants were trapped on the second floor; one described seeing a resident waving for help from a second floor window.
In an aggressive effort, rescue team members franticly searched to find the
trapped residents. Outside of the building firefighters located a severely burnt young child who had escaped from a second floor window. At this time members of the rescue team began to realize that the chance of survival for the other trapped inhabitants was extremely unlikely. Once the majority of the
fire had been extinguished, the rescue team had an opportunity to gain entry to the fire floor. Three adults were found. They had succumbed to smoke inhalation below, or in close proximity to, the window. Forthcoming reports would show that the home’s smoke detector was not working preventing the occupants from
receiving an appropriate alert.
A NEW RESOLUTION
Mr. Franklin has never forgotten that fateful Thursday morning, witnessing an innocent family surrender their lives to smoke inhalation as he and the rescue team struggled to gain entry to the burning home. It was through the tragedy of that day, and others like it, that a resolve was born within Mr. Franklin. Something had to be done to create a safer means of escaping buildings threatened by heavy smoke, fire or other emergency situations.
Having climbed to the rank of battalion chief after 25 years of service Larry
Franklin retired from the Paterson Fire Department. With the knowledge
gained throughout his years of service and the resolve to prevent needless
loss of life Mr. Franklin founded Quest Safety Products in 2006. Quest Safety
Products was founded to both educate its’ clients on safety issues and to provide innovative lifesaving products.
LESSONS LEARNED : LIVES SAVED
Reflecting upon past experiences there was a noticeably recurrent feature to many of the fatalities the rescue teams were unable to reach. Alike the December 2002 fire’s victims many of the fatalities encountered
throughout Mr. Franklin’s course of service were found near windows or doors.
This problem would lead to the creation of The Smart Egress Emergency System.
